Precious metals, mainly gold and silver, produced during the pick-and-shovel gold rushes of 1860 and 1900 are shown by the first two spikes. The amount of gold produced since 1980 using open pit mining and heap leach technology is shown by the last spike. While gold production has increased dramatically, so has the scale of the environmental damage.
