| The Austin Gold Venture mine, an unprofitable mine built at high elevations
in the Toiyabe Mountains just south of Austin, Nevada, destroyed a pristine roadless area. |
Exploration at the Gold Venture mine lead to miles of roads that are either
unreclaimed or partially reclaimed. The scars will dominate the landscape for centuries. |

| The Mt Hamilton mine destroyed a 10,700 foot mountain in the north end
of the White Pine range west of Ely, NV. |
The Briggs Mine scars the Panamint Range in Southern
California. It is situated on the boundary of Death Valley National Park, between two wilderness areas, on
lands sacred to the Timbisha Shoshone tribe. |
| Great Basin Mine Watch works to prevent mining in areas that
are inappropriate for mining for either community, biodiversity, wilderness, cultural and/or sacred lands
reasons. The photos above all represent mines that should not have been built. There are currently two projects
that we are fighting to stop permitting because they are being proposed on lands sacred to Native American
people. |
| 1. The Briggs Mine in southern California is proposing to do exploration
about 3 miles to the north of the existing mine. While the area has some old road scars, it is essentially
pristine. Click here for more information on the Briggs Mine and its
expansion plans. |
| 2. The Cortez Mining Corporation proposes to mine on Mt. Tenabo,
a sacred mountain in Crescent Valley, Nevada. Currently, an environmental impact statement is being prepared
for the proposed mine. Click here for a copy of our letter to the
BLM regarding this study. |
| The 1872 Mining Law
is ultimately the cause of this degradation
because the mining industry and the federal agencies that implement the law believe that it gives the mining
proponent a right to mine. Click here to learn about the mining law. |
