Phoenix Mine Leaky Abandoned Mine
The Battle Mountain Complex, to be expanded by Newmont as part of their Phoenix Project, may be one of the most polluted active mine sites in the Great Basin. At the historic Buckskin Mine north of Winnemucca in the Santa Rosa Mountains, a leaky adit drains acidic water across the tailings and into the North Fork of the Little Humboldt River.
Paradise Peak Blowing tailings
Contaminants at the Paradise Peak pit lake threaten to pollute surrounding groundwater. Wind can blow toxic tailings into the air where people and wildlife will breath it.

Great Basin Mine Watch is involved in a variety of projects designed to protect the environment from pollution. Click on the topic in the following list to learn more.
